We are so thrilled that Kara joined the SPAN volunteer team in February 2015. In the last 6 months Kara has trained in not one but THREE different volunteer roles! She simultaneously supported SPAN clients as a DART victim advocate, Children’s Volunteer, and was just completing the training as a Court Advocate when she was hired as our Transitional Services Advocate this summer.
Kara’s commitment to supporting survivors and working to end violence is evident in all she takes on. She takes on any challenge that comes up and steps up whenever a need arises.

Where were you born/where did you do your growing up? Anything you’d like to share about YOU. I was raised here in Boulder, and then stayed here to attend CU for my undergrad. Although I grew up here, I’ve never been good at sticking around for very long. I studied abroad in Peru for my junior year, then lived in Chile and India, before completing my Master’s (Postcolonial Culture & Global Policy) in London. I’m super excited to be back here more permanently.
Do you have a 5 or 10 year plan? If so, would you share it with us? I just started working at SPAN as their Transitional Services Advocate so I’m planning to stick around here for a while. Long-term I hope to attend law school for immigration law, but that’s a few years out.
Do you have any pets? I have a black cat named Jackie. She currently lives with my parents as they spoiled her while I was living abroad and let her into the backyard. Apartment living is no longer an option. I also think she misses the dogs too much, even though she pretends she hates them.
Do you like water sports? Do winter sports count? I enjoy the snow which is technically just frozen water. I already have my ski pass and am looking forward to spending a lot of time in the mountains this winter.
Kara has tirelessly offered all of herself as an advocate and we consider ourselves lucky that she chose SPAN as the organization to give her time as a volunteer and now, as a Full time staff member. Congratulations Kara!
