Homelessness Contribution Tax Credit Program (a BIG plus for SPAN donors!)
SPAN is an approved non-profit organization for the Homelessness Contribution Tax Credit (HCTC) program!
What is HCTC?
The Colorado Homeless Contribution Income Tax Credit (HCTC) works to encourage folks to donate to approved nonprofit organizations that assist individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
This is an incentive for YOU, the donor, to make a certified contribution to SPAN! Colorado Taxpayers can claim 25% of their donation (monetary or value of in-kind) as a state income tax credit if contributed to a qualified organization in a non-rural county.
What donations qualify for the HCTC?
Any donation made to SPAN after January 1st, 2023, can qualify for the HCTC.
- Monetary contributions must be equal to or greater than $100 (this can be cumulative!)
- In-kind contributions must be $5,000 or more as evaluated by a third party on the date of donation.
- In-kind contributions include property, services, stocks, bonds, or other intangible property.
How do I apply for HCTC if my donation qualifies?
As of right now, SPAN will communicate directly with donors applying for HCTC. Together, we will fill out the HCTC form to be sent to The Office of Homeless Initiatives within the Colorado Department of Local Affairs and the Colorado Department of Revenue. The HCTC form requires the donor’s full Social Security Number and other personal information to verify identity. All personal information is stored in a secure database by the Department of Revenue and not by SPAN.
Colorado statute (C.R.S. 39-22-548) requires the taxpayer’s full Social Security Number and other personal identifying information to be included on the tax credit certificate. A CO Tax ID is not an acceptable replacement.
Due to this being a NEW tax credit, SPAN is working out the details of tracking qualifying HCTC donations. We will be sending out further information regarding this process, but if you would like to work on your application sooner, please contact: kristina@safehousealliance.org
