Studies shows that people who are in or have left an abusive relationship experience a higher than average level of anxiety, depression, panic attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Many victims find it difficult to deal with the emotional and psychological impacts of abuse and the ways it continues to affect their lives and relationships with others over time.
Fortunately, research also suggests that counseling services for victims who have experienced abuse can help to improve their well-being. For many victims, receiving counseling can be crucial in their recovery from trauma. SPAN’s counseling services are a great place to start your journey toward safety, hope and healing.
Whether you are in the midst of chaos, years have passed since the last abusive incident or you have witnessed a loved one experience abuse, you can find support. At SPAN, we offer individual counseling sessions and support groups that can assist you toward a safer and more informed life.

Child and Youth Counseling
Domestic violence can have a vastly different impact on children and young people than it does on adults. In our Children and Youth Counseling Program, we offer individual sessions that provide your child with tools they need to think critically in the real world. Our interactive work ensures that your child can feel safe to explore their own feelings in a supportive environment, focused on encouragement, respect and safety.
Abuse in Later Life Program
SPAN’s Abuse In Later Life Program is dedicated to raising awareness around abuse specific to older adult populations. Abuse in later life can take on aspects of traditional patterns of domestic violence and intimate partner violence, but will have unique characteristics common to older adults. This program includes counseling, support groups, advocacy, outreach and shelter for older adults as well as services and community education to families and caregivers. SPAN is partnered with other area organizations, working collectively to address the needs of elder abuse survivors.

Support for Immigrant Survivors and Latinx Services
Survivors of domestic violence frequently feel the burden of shame and isolation, but for immigrant survivors, these feelings can be compounded by language and cultural barriers, anti-immigrant sentiment, high rates of poverty and community isolation.
SPAN offers weekly drop-in support groups and individual counseling sessions conducted in Spanish for adults and children. These services are confidential and offered free of charge in Boulder, Lafayette and Broomfield.
While immigration status may impact an individual’s ability to apply for some housing options and programs, SPAN advocates will work with you to determine options and eligibility.
The SPAN Outreach Counseling Program provides social justice counseling — which is trauma-informed, strength-based, and client-defined — to immigrant survivors of domestic violence and their children. Additionally, the SPAN Advocacy Program also provides support and assistance for survivors with specific issues and concerns related to immigration. Whether an immigrant survivor is documented or undocumented, SPAN advocates can provide information, answer general questions and connect them with immigration resources in the community, including legal referrals, to explore possible options.
