Over the past few weeks, our Latine Survivor Support Group has been working on an Ofrenda (offering) for display at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA). In celebration of Día de los Muertos, BMoCA invited several community groups to create an Ofrenda to remember those who are no longer with us. A traditionally Mexican holiday, our Latine Survivor Support Group chose to honor the victims of domestic violence in Colorado in 2021.
Every Monday, our Latine Survivor Support Group came together to hand-stitch motivational messages and crochet hearts to honor each victim. The Ofrenda making had been a powerful project for the group. Led by Harpiar Kaur, our Spanish Bilingual Tri-City Counselor and Community Advocate, the group has allowed survivors to connect and foster community. The Ofrenda project has provided group members with a therapeutic outlet for their emotions, enabling them to understand and communicate their experiences in ways words can’t always convey. Harpiar has guided their artistic experience to empower and serve as a tool of self-discovery on their paths toward healing.
SPAN was so grateful to be part of this exhibition at BMoCA. Opportunities like these make us proud to be part of the Boulder community!
