Inclusivity and Social Justice
SPAN plays an important role in enhancing understanding and responses to diversity where there are domestic violence concerns. Our services, support, resources and assistance is provided in an accessible, inclusive and responsive manner for all people — regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, race, religion, age, ability or income level.
While society has come a long way in our understanding of intimate partner violence, maintaining the belief that domestic and sexual violence are rooted in power and control, today we understand that abuse also stems from transphobia, misogyny and rigid definitions of gender roles and masculinity.
Unfortunately, domestic violence knows no boundaries, and it is not limited to any one type of relationship. It can — and does — occur in all relationships, regardless of the individuals’ gender, sexual orientation or gender identity. This is why we aim to incorporate inclusivity and social justice into all of our services, support and resources.
This approach allows us to advocate for our clients in a variety of areas, whether it is in the therapeutic session or approaching and confronting larger systemic problems related to oppression. We believe that in order to end violence against any individual, we must understand and challenge the varying forms of oppression people experience, which can be intricately woven into domestic violence. In counseling sessions, we will work side by side with you to respectfully and sensitively explore your own cultural and historical struggles, helping to safely guide you on the road to hope and healing.
