Colorado Gives Day – Tuesday, December 7th
For many of us, the holiday season means gathering with the ones we love at home. But not every home is filled with safety or comfort. At Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN), we know that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner violence. For more than 40 years, SPAN has worked to end violence in our community through support, advocacy, education, and community organizing. In that period, we have grown and transitioned our programs to offer a critical “safety net” of services to vulnerable, low-income, and at-risk populations. Because we believe that everyone deserves a safe home.
Since 1979, SPAN has offered emergency shelter to survivors and their children in our community. Shelter remains to be one of our critical services, as so many survivors are faced with the difficult decision of enduring violence or experiencing homelessness. Research shows approximately 60% of women experiencing homelessness is due to domestic violence and up to 92% have experienced some sort of physical or sexual abuse in their lifetime. SPAN’s shelter meets the basic needs of survivors, in addition to being a space where survivors can find support in safety planning, case management, community referrals, and counseling services. To support survivors long-term, our transitional housing program to helps families find safe and secure housing to call their own. By helping survivors with the “other things”, such as finding a job or opening a bank account, survivors work towards emotional and financial self-sufficiency.
This holiday season, YOU can help give survivors of domestic violence and their children a safe home in our community. On Tuesday, December 7th, Colorado Gives Day, you can donate to Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN) to ensure our emergency and long-term services are available to all those in need.
